Rhinoplasty
(Nose Reshaping)
What is the Procedure?
Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is a sophisticated surgical procedure designed to change the shape and size of the nose. It can address a wide range of aesthetic concerns, such as reducing a dorsal hump, refining the nasal tip, narrowing the nostrils, or altering the angle between the nose and upper lip. Beyond aesthetics, rhinoplasty can also correct structural defects, such as a deviated septum, to improve breathing function (a procedure known as septorhinoplasty). The ultimate goal is to create a nose that is in harmonious balance with your other facial features.
Who is a Good Candidate for this Procedure?
You may be an excellent candidate for rhinoplasty if you:
- Are unhappy with the size or shape of your nose.
- Have a nose that is disproportionate to the rest of your face.
- Have breathing difficulties due to structural issues within your nose.
- Are at least in your late teens, as your facial growth should be complete.
- Are physically healthy and a non smoker.
- Have clear, realistic goals for the improvement of your appearance.
The Consultation Process
- Your consultation is a critical step. We will have an in depth discussion about what you dislike about your nose and what you hope to achieve. I will conduct a thorough physical examination of both the internal and external nasal structures. We will take clinical photographs, and I may use computer imaging software to simulate potential outcomes. This helps ensure we share a common aesthetic goal. We will also discuss the surgical plan, recovery, and any potential risks involved.
Surgical Procedure
- Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia. The choice of technique depends on your specific anatomy and desired changes.
- Closed Rhinoplasty: All incisions are made inside the nostrils, so there are no visible external scars. This approach is typically used for more straightforward modifications to the nasal bridge and tip.
- Open Rhinoplasty: This technique involves a small incision made across the columella (the strip of tissue between the nostrils) in addition to the internal incisions. This allows for the skin to be lifted, providing direct visibility and access to the entire nasal framework. It is preferred for more complex cases requiring significant reshaping of the nasal tip or revision surgery.
- During the procedure, I will artfully sculpt the underlying bone and cartilage to create your desired new shape. If breathing is being corrected, I will straighten the septum at the same time.
Recovery and Downtime
Week 1:
You will have an external splint on your nose for support. Swelling and bruising around the eyes are most prominent during this week. Discomfort is manageable with prescribed medication. The splint is typically removed after 7 days.
Weeks 2-4:
You can usually return to work and social activities. The majority of the swelling and all bruising will have subsided. Strenuous activities and contact sports must be avoided.
Months 2-3:
Your nose will continue to refine. You will look “normal” to others, but you will notice subtle changes as the residual swelling gradually disappears.
1 Year:
The final, stable result of your rhinoplasty will be fully visible, as all subtle swelling will have resolved.
Potential Risks and Complications
- Risks include bleeding, infection, adverse reaction to anaesthesia, difficulty breathing through the nose, unsatisfactory aesthetic outcome, and the potential need for revision surgery. These risks are minimized by selecting a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon.
Frequently Asked questions (FAQs)
Will my nose look “done” or unnatural?
My surgical philosophy is to create a natural-looking result that enhances your overall facial harmony, not to create an operated look.
ow long until I see the final result?
While you will see a major improvement once the splint is removed, the final, refined shape can take up to a year to fully emerge.
Is rhinoplasty painful?
Patients typically report feeling “congested” and uncomfortable rather than in severe pain. This is well-controlled with medication.
