Facelift (Rhytidectomy)
(Reduction Mammaplasty)
What is the Procedure?
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a comprehensive surgical procedure designed to address the visible signs of ageing in the lower two-thirds of the face and neck. A modern facelift is not simply about tightening the skin; it is a sophisticated procedure that repositions the deeper foundational tissues of the face (known as the SMAS layer), removes excess, sagging skin, and redrapes the remaining skin smoothly over the newly uplifted contours. The result is a natural-looking rejuvenation that turns back the clock, correcting jowls, deep facial creases, and a sagging neckline to restore a more youthful and defined facial structure
Who is a Good Candidate for this Procedure?
You may be a good candidate for a facelift if you:
- Are bothered by the presence of jowls and loss of a defined jawline .
- Have deep creases extending from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds) and from the mouth to the chin (marionette lines).
- Have sagging skin and muscle banding in your neck ( turkey neck ).
- Feel you look older or more tired than you feel.
- Have good skin elasticity, are a non-smoker, and are in good health.
- Have a realistic understanding of what the surgery can accomplish.
The Consultation Process
- Our consultation will be a detailed and honest discussion about your goals. We will carefully analyse your facial anatomy, including your bone structure, skin quality, and the specific areas of concern. We will discuss the different types of facelifts available, from a mini-lift for early signs of ageing to a full facelift for more comprehensive rejuvenation. It is crucial that we create a plan that addresses your needs while ensuring a completely natural, unoperated appearance.
Surgical Procedure
- The Incisions: Incisions are meticulously planned to be hidden within the natural contours of the face. They typically begin in the hairline at the temples, continue down in front of the ear (hidden in the natural crease), curve up behind the earlobe, and end in the lower scalp. An additional small incision may be made under the chin to address the neck.
- The Lift: The skin is gently lifted, providing access to the underlying SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) layer. This deeper layer of tissue is then tightened and repositioned. This is the most critical step for achieving a natural and long-lasting result.
- Redraping and Closure: Excess skin is trimmed, and the remaining skin is redraped over the uplifted facial contours without tension. The incisions are then closed with fine sutures.
Recovery and Downtime
- Weeks 1-2: This is the main recovery phase. You will experience significant swelling and bruising. You will have a head dressing and possibly drains for the first day or two. Rest with your head elevated is paramount. Most sutures are removed within 7-10 days.
- Weeks 2-4: You will start to look and feel much better. Most of the visible bruising will have faded, and you may feel comfortable returning to work and social activities, often with the help of makeup.
Month 2-3: You can typically resume all normal activities, including strenuous exercise. The vast majority of swelling will be gone, and you will be enjoying your results.
Months 6-12: All subtle, residual swelling will resolve, revealing the final, refined outcome. Incision lines will continue to fade and mature
Potential Risks and Complications
- Risks include bleeding (hematoma), infection, nerve injury (usually temporary, affecting facial muscle movement), poor scarring, and hair loss at the incision sites. Choosing a highly experienced surgeon is the best way to mitigate these risks.
Frequently Asked questions (FAQs)
At what age should I get a facelift?
There is no “right” age. The decision should be based on the physical signs of ageing and your personal desires, not a number.
Will I look “wind-swept” or “pulled”?
This is a common fear based on outdated techniques. A modern facelift, which focuses on lifting the deep SMAS layer, creates a refreshed and natural look, not a tight one.
How long will the results of a facelift last?
A facelift can turn back the clock by about 7-10 years. While you will continue to age naturally from your new “starting point,” the benefits of the surgery are very long-lasting.
