Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

What is the Procedure?

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. A breast lift is designed to correct sagging (ptosis) that occurs due to factors like pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, ageing, and gravity. The procedure can rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is more youthful and uplifted. It’s important to note that a lift reshapes the breast but does not significantly change its size.

Who is a Good Candidate for this Procedure?

You may be a good candidate for a breast lift if:

The Consultation Process

  • in our private consultation, we will discuss your aesthetic goals. I will assess the degree of breast ptosis (sagging), your skin quality and elasticity, and the current position of your nipples. We will determine if a breast lift alone is sufficient to meet your goals, or if you might also benefit from the addition of breast implants to restore lost volume (a procedure known as an augmentation mastopexy). We will review incision options and what you can expect from the results.

Surgical Procedure

  • A mastopexy is performed under general anaesthesia. The choice of incision technique depends on the degree of sagging.
  • Crescent Lift: For minimal sagging. Involves a small, crescent-shaped incision along the upper half of the areola’s border.
  • Donut (Periareolar) Lift: For mild sagging. The incision is made in a circle around the areola, allowing for the removal of a “donut” of skin.
  • Lollipop (Vertical) Lift: For moderate sagging. This includes the circular incision around the areola plus a vertical incision running down to the breast crease.
  • Anchor (Inverted-T) Lift: For significant sagging. This is the most comprehensive lift, using the lollipop incision plus a horizontal incision along the breast crease.
  • During the surgery, excess skin is removed, the internal breast tissue is lifted and reshaped, and the nipple and areola are repositioned to a higher, more youthful location.
  • Recovery and Downtime

    • Week 1: You will experience swelling, bruising, and mild to moderate discomfort. You will need to wear a supportive surgical bra continuously.

    • Weeks 1-2: Most patients can return to non-physical work.

    • Weeks 4-6: You must avoid strenuous exercise, especially involving the upper body and chest, as well as any heavy lifting.

    • Months 3-6: The majority of the swelling will have resolved, and the final shape and position of your breasts will become apparent. Your scars will begin their maturation process.

    Potential Risks and Complications

    • Risks include unfavourable scarring, infection, bleeding, changes in nipple or breast sensation (usually temporary), and asymmetry. The risks are similar to those of other breast procedures and will be discussed in full during your consultation.

    Frequently Asked questions (FAQs)

    • Will a breast lift make my breasts bigger?

No, a lift does not increase breast volume. Its purpose is to lift and reshape existing tissue. If you desire larger breasts, a lift can be combined with augmentation.

    • Are the results of a breast lift permanent?

The results are long-lasting; however, the effects of gravity, ageing, and future weight fluctuations or pregnancies can cause the breasts to sag again over time. Maintaining a stable weight can help preserve your results.

    • Can I have a lift if I plan to have more children?

It is generally recommended to wait until you have finished having children, as a future pregnancy can re-stretch the skin and compromise the results of your surgery.
