Breast Augmentation

(Augmentation Mammaplasty)

What is the Procedure?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase breast size and enhance breast shape and symmetry. This is achieved using breast implants or, in some cases, fat transfer. It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, helping women feel more confident and proportionate in their physique. The procedure can restore breast volume lost after pregnancy or weight loss, achieve a more rounded breast shape, or improve natural breast size asymmetry.

Who is a Good Candidate for this Procedure?

You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation if you:

The Consultation Process

  • The consultation is a personalized and educational e xperience. We will discuss your motivations and aesthetic goals in detail. We will take precise breast measurements and evaluate your chest anatomy and skin quality. A key part of the consultation will be a detailed discussion of your aesthetic preferences. We will then explore the surgical possibilities and specific implant options best suited to your unique anatomy, considering crucial parameters like your skin thickness, existing breast tissue, and the inframammary fold (IMF). This helps you visualize the potential outcome and choose a size that feels right for you. We will discuss implant types, placement, and incision options to create a completely customized surgical plan.

Surgical Procedure

  • Breast augmentation is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under general anaesthesia. The key decisions we will make together are:
  • Implant Type:

    • Silicone Implants: Filled with a cohesive silicone gel that feels very similar to natural breast tissue.
    • Saline Implants: Filled with sterile salt water.

    Incision Location:

    • Inframammary: In the crease underneath the breast (most common, provides excellent access).
    • Periareolar: Around the border of the areola.
    • Transaxillary: In the armpit.

    Implant Placement:

    • Submuscular (Under the Muscle): The implant is placed partially or fully beneath the pectoralis major muscle. This often provides a more natural look and may lower the risk of capsular contracture.

    Subglandular (Over the Muscle):

    • The implant is placed directly behind the breast tissue, on top of the muscle.
    • The surgery itself typically takes 1-2 hours.

    Recovery and Downtime

    • First Few Days: Expect soreness, tightness, and swelling in the chest area. This is managed with prescribed pain medication.
    • Week 1: You will wear a surgical bra for support. Most patients can return to a desk job and light daily activities within 5-7 days

    • Weeks 2-4: Swelling will begin to subside. Avoid any heavy lifting (more than 5 kg) or strenuous upper body movements.

    • Weeks 4-6: You can usually resume most forms of exercise, as approved by me

    • Months 3-6: The implants will “settle” into their final position, and the breasts will look and feel more natural as the tissues relax. The final results will be evident.

    Potential Risks and Complications

    • Risks include infection, bleeding, changes in nipple or breast sensation, implant malposition, implant rupture or deflation, and capsular contracture (the formation of hard scar tissue around the implant). It’s also important to know that breast implants are not considered lifetime devices and may require replacement in the future.

    Frequently Asked questions (FAQs)

    • How do I choose the right size?

The goal is proportion, not just size. We will select an implant size based on your body frame, existing breast tissue, and aesthetic goals to achieve a balanced, natural-looking result.

    • Will I still be able to breastfeed?

Most women can still breastfeed after augmentation, but the ability can be affected, depending on the surgical technique used.

    • How long do breast implants last?

Modern implants are very durable, but they are not guaranteed to last a lifetime. The average lifespan is typically 10-15 years, after which they may need to be replaced.
